Investigator Training Requirements

The PHS Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the PHS policies require that all individuals who are required to work with animals in biomedical research be trained to the rules and regulations governing the use of animals. These programs require training in the humane methods of animal experimentation, proper care and handling of animal species, and appropriate use of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers.

DLAR provides a training program to all SUNY DMC investigators, students and technicians who will have direct contact with the laboratory animals. Individual or small group training sessions are provided with lectures and video that will help familiarize participants with aspects of the laboratory animal research program.. Sessions are tailored to the individual needs of the researchers attending. Additional training programs are available to research staff members throughout the year.

A computer-based training program, sponsored by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, is available for campus investigators and their staff. This program is mandatory for all staff listed on a proposed animal use protocol. The CBT program, which includes both the web courses and a self-assessment exam, can be found at www.aalaslearninglibrary.org.

  • For the web courses, a user-name and password must be obtained from DLAR. Users must take both the non-VA version of the "Working with the IACUC" and the "Introduction to Research Animal Methodologies" course for the specific specie used in the proposed animal use protocol. Other courses, while not mandatory, are available.

For information regarding these training programs, contact Cora Kaiser, 270-3306.
