INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE

The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) is a support activity for the Health Science Center's research and teaching programs. The Division has 27 professional, technical and office personnel to carry out the animal care program in accordance with the standards established by the NYS Department of Health, the US Public Health Service, the US Department of Agriculture and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

DLAR Mission Statement: What We Do

  • Provide professional oversight to the Center's entire animal research and teaching programs to insure that all animals are cared for and used properly, humanely and safely.
  • Provide expertise and direction for the now underway animal facility renovation program.
  • Interact cooperatively with the Animal Care and Use Committee, Employee Health Service, Facilities Management and Development, Security, University Affairs, Human Resources and other Center offices.
  • Assert a major effort to assure institutional compliance with regulations and guidelines of federal, state and other agencies.
  • Provide veterinary clinical services for all animals housed at the Health Science Center and provides consultative services to investigators using animals in research/teaching protocol development and grant applications.
  • Provide all animal care activities such as feeding, watering, restraining, cage cleaning/sanitation, record keeping, and ordering of all animals, equipment and supplies from outside sources.
  • Actively promote the advancement of knowledge by conducting training programs and seminars for both animal technicians and animal users and by sponsoring attendees/participants at relevant local, state and national meetings.
  • Actively seek extramural funding from sources such as NIH and conducts a fiscally sound operation.
